Vatnajökull Glacier-Blue ice cave

Vatnajökull glacier blue ice caves, primarily found in the Breiðamerkurjökull outlet glacier near Jökulsárlón.

They are breathtaking, natural, and seasonal, typically accessible from November to March.
They are formed by summer meltwater and feature vibrant blue, compressed ice.

Due to Iceland's unpredictable weather, temperature fluctuations cause changes in the shape of ice caves.
Summer melting accelerates, and ice caves may collapse; winter temperatures drop, and new ice caves may reappear.
Therefore, the shape, location, and size of ice caves may vary each year.

I strive to avoid peak tourist season to create a more private and tranquil experience.
TIPS: Avoid CHINESE NEW YEAR

JAN 2025

Sunrise cave

I enjoy to be a EARLY BIRD where I can enjoy myself without any distrub.
The golden moment is my favourite.

Let’s go to explore the ice cave.
Due to the consistently low temperatures, the ice layer is relatively stable.
As temperatures drop further, the conditions of the ice caves will also improve.

After the first snow

Light needs to be able to get through the newer ice and snow on the surface of the glacier for the ice that forms the ice cave to appear blue.

Small ice caves all display a beautiful blue.

When I enter another Blue ice cave, it is quite dark.

I was shocked where there is a super blue colour.

A snow-covered canyon

Walking a bit further, we found an isolated glacial lake

A breathtaking sight

FEB 2026

I had come back to visit in 2026.

In the early morning, some golden light shoot beside the cave.

Mirror reflection

Strange eyes

Under dim winter light, natural light refraction makes the ice cave scenery even more dreamy.

Small frozen waterfall

Inside the ice cave, there’s a small frozen waterfall

Little road between canyon

Little icecave

When I enter into this little ice cave, I found a special angle.

Overall

It’s a wonderful experience to be inside and enjoy this spectacular wonder of nature.
