The Secret to Seceda at Sunrise

Photographing Seceda at sunrise is legendary for its difficulty—not because of the terrain, but because of the timing. The iconic Seceda cable car doesn't run early enough to catch the first light, leaving the summit completely empty during the most magical hours of the day.

To bypass this, I stayed the night at Rifugio Fermeda, nestled on the alpine meadows below the peak. At 3:30 AM, under a sky full of stars, I began the steep 1.5-hour hike up through the dark to reach the Seceda ridge before dawn.

Greeted by a ethereal blanket of blue-hour fog engulfing the Odle group.

The reward for that early morning scramble was absolute tranquility. Standing alone on the edge of the razor-sharp cliffs as the blue hour mist rolled over Val Gardena

As dawn broke, the rolling clouds lifted from Val Gardena, revealing the iconic green slopes and dramatic limestone cliffs of Seceda.

My Basecamp for Western Dolomites:

Choosing the right basecamp is crucial for any photography trip to the Dolomites, especially if you want to beat the crowds to sunrise locations. During my time exploring the region, I stayed in this picturesque mountain town nestled in the heart of Val Gardena.

It served as the ultimate home base for exploring the Western Dolomites. Every morning and evening, I commuted to iconic spots like Alpe di Siusi (Seiser Alm) and Val di Funes right from here. Returning to this quiet, misty town after a long day of shooting felt like stepping straight into a fairytale. Coming back to those warm, glowing lights shrouded in evening fog was easily one of the most comforting routines of the trip.

Also, Staying in or around Castelrotto / Ortisei gives you a massive tactical advantage for photography. You're positioned right at the gateway to both Alpe di Siusi and Seceda, saving you precious driving time during early morning blue hour runs.

The Idyllic Beauty of Val di Funes

Framed by the dramatic, jagged spires of the Odle Group, this area houses two of the most iconic postcard views in the Alps.

My first stop was the famous Chiesetta di San Giovanni in Ranui, a tiny, baroque chapel standing in solitary isolation against a vast emerald meadow and dense pine forest

Just a short distance away, heading up the hills above Santa Maddalena, reveals the ultimate valley panorama. Watching patchy cloud shadows dance across the rolling green pastures as afternoon sun illuminated the church spire below was pure magic—a quintessential South Tyrolean landscape

Mornings on Alpe di Siusi

Alpe di Siusi (Seiser Alm) is famous for being Europe's largest high-alpine pasture, but to truly experience its magic, you have to be there as light first touches the plateau. Because vehicular access is restricted during daytime hours, shooting early morning light here requires staying on the meadow or driving up long before the sun breaks the horizon.

My patience was rewarded with a masterclass in mountain atmosphere. Before sunrise, a delicate layer of low cloud hovered between the rolling green knolls and the dark, formidable mass of Sassolungo.
